Opening the Tap

July 27, 2020

It has been a long time since I have sat down with the intention of writing. Generally, I catch the scent of a topic and my interest might be peaked just enough to learn more about it, writing as I do. However, lately I feel life has been too busy to let this happen organically. Even when I was allowing ideas to come to be spontaneously I would only end up writing one or two things a year, and I’ve always wanted to do more writing.

My intention today is to become a better writer. I will become a better writer by authoring and publishing blog posts about the things that interest me. My patio will become my studio space and ideas shall flow from my neurons directly into this markdown file. Easy right?

A good friend of mine who is also a songwriter often references an old tap when referring to composing lyrics. He’ll say the longer the tap has been shut off, the dirtier the water in the pipes will become. However, if you open the tap and let the water run long enough it will eventually become clear and clean again. My hope is that sentiment is as analogous to writing prose as it is to authoring lyrics and melody.

This is me opening the tap and letting all of that stagnant water flow until something true emerges. I want to write about the things I know but also discover what I don’t know by writing about them. I want to master my craft and document the process for everyone who might find it useful in the future.

Primarily I will be writing about software development and the many tools and practices that surround it. I am a software developer by both career and hobby so naturally it’s the domain in which I spend the majority of my focus.

I love building things from the ground up and solving the various blocks of technical complexity that together become greater than the sum of their parts.

That is exactly what I intend to write about here. The various components of my interests that together form more than just individual building blocks.

Stay tuned.
